Camp Africa Eco Centre Retains International Green Flag

‘At the Western Cape Eco Schools Awards Ceremony on Friday 02 March 2007, My African Dream Children’s Trust’s innovative Tented Educational Camp, Camp Africa, was awarded Eco School status for a second year running.

Eco Schools is an international programme of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), started in Europe in 1994. Over 4000 schools have earned Eco Schools flags in over 37 countries, including South Africa. Eco Schools South Africa is coordinated by the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA).

Camp Africa, have recently relocated their tented educational camp to an alien gum forest on the farm Wildschutsbrand, at the junction of Red Hill and Plateau Road, outside Scarborough, after being thrown a lifeline by the farm’s owner, Ben Kopfer.

The camp now boasts larger grounds, an ‘Out of Africa’ boma, a Recycling Centre,
Eco Ablutions with Methane Digester, Grey Water system, low flow shower heads and energy saving lighting throughout.

Camp Director and Trustee of My African Dream Children’s Trust, Terry Corr, is delighted with the international award.

‘We are still the only internationally accredited Eco Centre in the Western Cape.’

‘After a difficult year in 2006, when we were first destroyed by a mini tornado in May and after rebuilding our camp, our lease expired at Soetwater. We are thankful for the long term conservation vision of Cape Farmhouse Restaurant owner, Ben Kopfer. Our new venue is awesome and the camp layout has been designed with children in mind. We intend to work towards providing high class relevant educational programmes, financial and environmental sustainability, closer involvement with the Red Hill and Ocean View community learners and backed up by eco friendly design. Our educational programme has been adapted to provide more for Outdoor Adventure, working in close collaboration with SunScene, who run an Adventure Course on the farm. We are also collaborating with Frans Muhl, who runs the successful organic food garden and Philip Nangle, well known musician, specializing in traditional African instruments, both resident at Wildschutsbrand’.

An open day and Celebration to raise the Eco Schools Green Flag, open our new camp and thank the participants of the recent Charity Lighthouse Abseil Challenge, held at Slangkop lighthouse, will be held on Saturday 31 March 2007 from 1.00pm until 6.00pm. If you would like to attend or to view the facilities at Camp Africa, contact Janis at 021 780 1353 or Cell 084 680 1353.
