Lighthouse Abseil Challenge

On a cold, wintery Saturday morning, 03 March 2007, a bunch of Intrepid Abseilers from all walks of life, braved the elements to abseil down Slangkop lighthouse, the tallest lighthouse in South Africa, to raise funds for My African Dream Children’s Trust.

Leading Adventure Operator, Abseil Africa, provided all the training and equipment to allow novices to tackle the 33m high structure. Medical backup was provided by Cape Medical Response and ER 24, sponsored by Dr. Peter Solomon, Long Beach Medical Centre.

Overall , 57 Abseilers took the plunge in the windy, rainy conditions in aid of My African Dream Children’s Trust.

Thanks especially to Pearl Nel and the First National Bank (FNB) Volunteers who gave up their Saturday to assist and ended up abseiling as well.

Over R50 000 was raised on the day, thanks to the special efforts of fundraiser, Emma Sexton.

Director, Terry Corr, thanked all participants when Camp Africa hosted the abseilers at a special function at Camp Africa on the 31 March 2007, where a sheep spit and salads was enjoyed.

‘It was an incredible achievement by all who participated. To be suspended over the side of the lighthouse at 33m is really scary. It takes a lot of will power from those that participated. My African Dream Children’s Trust salutes you all’.
