The Marine Environmental Education Trust (MEET) was established
in 1996 to conduct Marine Environmental Education programmes for
school children. Over 20 000 learners benefited from these programmes.
In 2002, MEET launched Camp Africa Tented Educational
Camps with a small grant from the National Lotteries Distribution Trust
Fund (NLDTF). The successful implementation of these camps resulted
in further funding in 2003 and 2004, allowing nearly 2000 learners to
attend these interactive Three day, two night camps.
During this time, an application was submitted to the
City of Cape Town to lease a portion of land in Soetwater, near Kommetjie
for a permanent site.
In December 2004, a decision was made to launch a new
trust, My African Dream Childrens Trust, to replace MEET, with
a stronger Social Development focus. This also provided the oppurtunity
to bring the organisation in line with the new Non Profit Organisations
Act, register as a Non Profit Organisation (NPO) and apply for Tax Exemption for Donors. These were all received over time and My African Dream is
now a registered NPO, Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) and has 18 a
Tax Exemption for Donors.
My African Dream continues to operate Camp Africa Tented
Educational Camps from its permanent base at the Farm Wildschutbrand, near Cape Point. |
